Poland Jewish Cemeteries Restoration Project (PJCRP) The "Poland Jewish Cemeteries Restoration Project" (PJCRP) has three major objectives: 1. RESTORATION/PRESERVATION-of the estimated 1400 devastated Jewish cemeteries in Poland and fencing of the large number of mass graves, recognizing the important efforts already underway on specific sites and the need for continued funding for perpetual care of every site. 2. DOCUMENTATION-photographing and translating the monument; filming of documentaries of before, during and after restoration; and, making all of this available publicly. 3. EDUCATION-particularly of youth about the Shoah, about Jewish heritage in Poland, and about tolerance and reconciliation. An important educational initiative begun in September 2006 is the VOICES-SHOAH PROJECT voices of the living-voices of youth, speaking for the silenced voices of the Shoah. Why restore the Jewish cemeteries of Poland? For Jews, care of their ancestral cemeteries is not only a religious obligation but considered amongst the greatest of mitzvot (good deeds). It is for us to do this for the millions murdered in the Shoah, they and their unborn children, who would have been caring for their cemeteries. |
